The factory as it stands today features the work of nationally and internationally renowned artists and artisans all within the rustic charm of the original hardwood floors, wood beams, and brick walls of the factory. Beyond the visual arts, The Old Bag Factory features an antique shop, vintage clothing, concert and banquet hall as well as a café and pastry shop. A number of artists, shops, eateries and musicians have passed through The Old Bag Factory, but none-the-less, this every changing eclectic mix has continued. Originally a soap factory, the Chicago-Detroit Bag Company moved into the building in the early 1900’s and merged with Chase Bags in the 1920’s. The factory remained in production through the early 1980’s when Larion and Nancy Swartzendruber purchased the building and began its transformation into shops and artist studios. Not all the shops are located within the factory. Dave and Shirley Shenk brought onto the site their very own authentic 1800’s log cabin and placed it next to a brick building also renovated into shop and studio space. The characteristic smokestack and boiler building also serves as an artist studio.
